2020 Olympics Have Been Postponed Says IOC Member Dick Pound

Veteran IOC member Dick Pound said Monday that the 2020 Summer Olympics planned in Tokyo, Japan are to be postponed due to the risk of the COVID-19 pandemic. The games have been up in the air for the last few weeks and officials had said they had three months to make this decision at that time. In the end, they needed less than a month to call it off. Now the question is when the games will be held. “On the basis of the information the IOC has, postponement has been decided,” Pound said in a phone interview. “The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the Games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.” Pound has been on the IOC board for decades and thinks more announcements will come, “It will come in stages,” he said. “We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense.”
