Look at that! Another week has past and we're all still here! Some TV programming notes. Despite the reviews, TBS will be premiering Justice League at 8pm this Sunday. It's not the Synder Cut that most want, but it's better than nothing. Also, TNT is having a Marvel Weekend. Plenty of things to do! Alright, a lot happened this past week so let's just dive right in with issue 87 of the Geek Freak of the Week.
Laughing Back To Theaters
If you want to see a grown man dressed as a clown dance down a staircase on the big screen...you can! Yes, this movie is on digital and Blu-ray but if you're wondering why it's going back to the big screen it's due to the Oscars. Traditionally, many of the movies nominated for Best Picture will return to the theaters for a few weeks so people can go and see them for the first time or to re-watch it. This move is also a last ditch effort to get people excited and back out to the movie theaters during a slow time of the year.
The Joker is nominated for 11 Academy Awards which will air on February 9th on ABC.
The Watch Is Over
If you liked the new Watchmen series on HBO get ready to find a new show to watch on Sunday nights. Show runner Damon Linelof has decided not to return for a season two on HBO. He has given the cable network his "blessing" to continue without him, but it looks like the box network is going to take a hard pass on that.
The series did wrap up a few things for fans of the comics and new viewers so a second season may not be needed. Still, this show did what many thought could not be possible. A good story that complimented the graphic novel while taking on a life of its own.
You can catch up on the nine-episode season on HBO Go.
eXiting The Mansion
Looks like there will be a new Professor X in the MCU. After a few long talks with Marvel & Disney Sir Patrick Stewart has officially announced that he is done portraying the mutant freedom fighter, Charles Xavier. He has been attached to this role off and on since the first X-Men film came out in 2000. His final performance as the character was in Logan which came out in 2017.
This doesn't come much of a shock. Back in 2014 fans were shocked (and thrilled) he was going to portray the character again in X-Men:Days of Future Past. When Logan came to theaters, our dear professors story was wrapped up for good. It was said at one point that Patrick Stewart would only take on the role again if he knew it was their plan to end his run of the character. So, spoilers, they killed him off for real in the film.
We can all assume the reason he is stepping back is due to his commitments to the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Picard.
Does this mean that James McAvory has been asked to reprise the role? Not sure on that. After the disappointment that was Dark Pheonix I'm not sure Disney and Marvel Studios want that series cannon anymore.
Return, The Clone Wars Have
This past Wednesday our prayers from the Force were answered. After six long years we will finally see the end of one of the best Star Wars series ever created. There are several reasons why you should really consider watching this series if you haven't.
- Even though it is animated this show is cannon with the rest of the Star Wars movies.
- If you watched The Mandalorian and saw Moff Gideon emerge from his damaged tie fighter he was using a weapon called "The Dark Saber". That prop was first introduced in the Clone Wars series back in 2010. The episode is called "the Mandalore Plot" and gives the weapon a great backstory.
- The trailer hints that there will be a huge focus on Darth Maul. With the new live action Kenobi series being made in the future this might give us some insight to what we will expect.
- The return of fan favorite Ahsoka! We saw her return in Star Wars Rebels (and had an epic lightsaber fight with Darth Vader aka her old master) the Clone Wars takes place before that event and we last saw those two leave on depressing notes. Will we see them meet up again? They do have some baggage to work out as Master and Apprentice. Also, she is going to battle Darth Maul. That's something we should all look forward to in this upcoming season.
- Gives more insight into the Clone Troopers. They aren't just some mindless creations taking orders. Some were actually individualized and had their own personalities. Now, did some still execute order 66 was it was proclaimed by Palpatine? Yup. However, this shows the struggle some of the troopers had with fighting this war.
- And of course, the return of some classic characters such as Obi Wan, Anakin Skywalker, Mace Windu, Yoda, Count Dooku, and General Grevious.
Did that convince you? Okay, if you need to watch or need a refresher on the show here what's you do. If you watch 4-5 episodes everyday starting this weekend, you'll be all caught up by the time the final season starts streaming on Disney+ in a few weeks. Sound like a plan? Okay, GO!
Star Wars: The Clone Wars starts streaming on February 21 on Disney+.
PS...yes, this was a movie first, but you can skip that. That movie made the prequels look good!
She's Back!
Production has begun for the Captain Marvel sequel. So much to ask!
- What's the title?
- What's the plot?
- Is it in space or on Earth?
- When will it come out?!
To answer a few, this is what I have. According to IGN the next film with our hero from the stars will be set in the present day (the Marvel present day that is) and set to land in theaters sometime in 2022. Also, it looks like her next movie will be linked to some of the Marvel Disney+ series.
So, here's the thing about the next Captain Marvel film. Marvel has the chance to use her to finally connect the MCU to the Fantastic Four. Because she's from space she can be informed on the Marvel first families ultimate villain, Galactus. She could also have a run in with The Silver Surfer! Of course, since the reports are saying this movie will be set on Earth, we could still have a meet-n-greet with Reed Richards and the rest of the crew.
