Vengeance and New Mutants Are Here In The Latest Geek Freak of the Week!

There are two big things to get across in this weeks Geek Freak. First off---New Mutants is OFFICIALLY In theaters!

Second ---news from DC Fan Dome!

There's so much news out there that having a migraine is going to be expected. Let's start with the DC Fan Dome because that's still fresh off the presses. Here's the breakdown (links are provided)

  • Wonder Woman 1984 released a new trailer showcasing Kristen Wiig in full Cheetah mode...and fanny packs.
  • Trailer for #TheSnyderCut of Justice League. The film will be broken up into 4 one-hour parts for HBO Max in 2021. The song chosen will give you flashbacks to Watchmen, also directed by Snyder.
  • Full look of who's who in The Suicide Squad. There's a lot of people.
  • Some Shazam! news. The sequel will officially be called Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Sadly, no trailer.
  • Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson gave us a quick look at Black Atom. His movie will feature members of the Justice Society including (not limited to) Atom Smasher and Hawkman.
  • And of course...first look at The Batman starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight himself. Download sales of Nirvana's Something in the way, which was featured in the trailer, are up.

There was one more piece of Batman news that was announced but that will be revealed a little later on. We need to talk about what has been waiting on a shelf for three years.

The New Mutants Are Here...No Really, It's True!

Lets run the dates again for this film....

  • April 13, 2018 - original release date
  • February 22, 2019
  • August 2, 2019
  • April 3, 2020
  • were there more? It felt like it....

It's now August 2020 and the movie is FINALLY in theaters. Still a surprise, right? With Covid it should have been delayed into 2021. Good decision? Bad one? For those wondering, don't expect this to be released on Disney+ anytime soon. Due to contracts with broadcast rights, mainly with FX, the film can't go to streaming. If you're wondering, "wait FX is owned by Disney, what gives"?. Yes, true, however when FX was owned by 20th Century they had secured the rights to air the movie once it was available for TV. That contract is still binding with the cable network and if advertisers are lined up it's not a smart business move. That's a lot of lost money. At least that's how I understand the situation.

Whether you want to or not, New Mutants is OFFICIALLY in theaters.

The Long Halloween Is Coming

Back to some Batman news. One of his most compelling modern tales of the Dark Knight's mythology is from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale. Between 1996 and 1997 DC released a 13 issue stand alone story arc titled Batman: The Long Halloween. The story was set during the early days of Batman's crusade on Gotham--Jim Gordon was a Lieutenant in the GCPD, Harvey Dent just became Gotham's District Attorney, and Robin was still in diapers. This series was the foundation for both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

At DC Fan Dome last week Warner Animation announced that this book will be adapted into an a new animated film split up into two parts. The first part will be available late spring or early summer of 2021 with the second in the fall. It's called the Long Halloween, makes sense, doesn't it? Also, the book is very long and detailed so omitted anything would make it a crime to fans.

Voice casts for this film include: Troy Baker, Jensen Ackles,Titus Welliver, and David Dastmalchian. Naya Rivera, who passed away in July, is also listed as a main character, presumably the voice of Selena Kyle/Catwoman. Her lines for this both parts of the movie were recorded before her unexpected death.

Sugar. Spice. This Doesn't Sound Nice.

Get ready, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are being developed into a live action series. Who told the CW they could do this? This series, if green lite, will explore the Powerpuff Girls as teenagers adjusting to a normal life since their childhood was dedicated to saving the City of Townsville. I'll say it again...who told the CW they could do this? This screams Riverdale just with superpowers - if they even still have them in this series. If you're thinking "why" (like I am) this isn;t really shocking or groundbreaking. The network has six superhero series already in their wheelhouse. Making a show like this, is going to be a cakewalk. Especially since Riverdale and other non-superhero shows have still proven to be a hit with audiences. So, why not combine the two?

I will say this now. I will only watch if Mojo Jojo is a series regular. You can't have a show about the Powerpuff Girls and NOT have everyone's favorite evil monkey lurking around.
