Stone Temple Pilots are getting the band back together Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. Eastern time for a livestream event celebrating their hit 1992 debut album, Core.
STP released its eighth studio album, the largely-acoustic Perdida, back in February. Plans to support Perdida with a run of intimate shows in small venues were short-circuited after lead singer Jeff Gutt announced in January that he needed to undergo immediate surgery to address a herniated disc.
The band of course was never able to make up any of the tour dates due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. So why Core? Why now?
Guitarist Dean DeLeo tells Pulse of Radio that he and his brother, bassist Robert DeLeo, have been exploring ways they might be able to perform again with the band.
Dean says that if it goes well, the band might dedicate future live streams to each one of its albums.
"Look, we're all itchin' to just get out and play," he continued. "You know we had over a hundred shows pulled out from under us this year. Everything. Not rescheduled — canceled — and there's nothing on the books for 2021, so it's just like, 'Let's do something! Let's play!'"
The live stream will also give the band an excuse to play a few tracks from the record that haven't been performed live in years, he added.
"One of them is 'Naked Sunday,'" Dean said. "I think the last time we played that was on Saturday Night Live, maybe 1993? So that one is one that's been locked away, and also 'Where The River Goes.' We haven't played that in many, many, many years — a couple decades."
