Today is National Cheeseburger Day!
We celebrate one of the most American meals anyone can have, The Cheeseburger! Now this is not to be confused with, National Double Cheeseburger Day, which occurred a few weeks ago, no this is the OG, the granddaddy that started it all. Now there are many claims to the name, Lionel Sternberger says he invented it in 1926 at Pasadena's The Rite Spot, O'Dell's say they placed it on their menu in 1928 smothered with chili (which actually makes it a chili burger), Kaelin's in Louisville, claims they invented it in 1934, and even Gus Belt, the founder of Steak n' Shake, says he applied for the trademark in the 1930s.
Whoever gave us this glorious invention of food, we as Americans thank you. Now, go out there to your favorite fast food place, or steakhouse, or sports bar, and enjoy that great American Dish, The Cheeseburger!
