Little Things, Big Things....

hug

(I found this today, Dec 5th, 2018. I wrote it 2 years ago - and never shared it. After re-reading it, I don’t know why I didn’t. So, here it is - a simple message. Hope it strikes a chord with some of you...)

I notice little things. Moments. They may last only seconds, but the impressions they leave last forever.

On Thanksgiving Day, after the family dinner, and just before the guests started to retreat to their own homes, our son Tyler had to go back to school to finish a project. He said his “goodbye’s” to my parents, and all of his cousins...

And then he hugged Valerie, his Mom.

As I sat and watched without saying a word, I noticed that it wasn’t a half hug some kids give their Mom’s. It was real, and strong. And even though I was across the room, I noticed, and it made me smile. It was a little thing, but it was so much more at the same time.

That’s when I took this photo, with my phone.

I’ve been thinking a lot about that moment lately, and how impactful it was on me. It was just a hug - just like the thousands that had come before it. But it was the kind of moment I won’t forget.  It’s the real stuff.

Nowadays, all of us live fast paced lives .We worry about major issues - like, school, college, getting a job, supporting a family, getting better at our professions, and moving up in the world. We spend most of our days doing one or more of those things. It never ends: Make the payments, get the groceries, do the laundry, study for the test, prepare the presentation, be there on time, and always trying to do it all - well. That’s what we worry about. The Big things.

But with experience, and time - I’m more convinced than ever that we’ve got it backwards. I believe that those little “moments” SHOULD BE  the big things. They go unnoticed, yet they can save you after a bad day. They’re the things that make you smile when you didn’t think you could, or the thing that restores hope at a time where there was none. And all you have to do is recognize them when they happen.

Like a heartfelt hug between a Mother and Son.

Or a supportive hand on your shoulder by a friend, when they know you need it.  A text to the friend you haven’t heard from that simply says “Hey, how are you?” Maybe it’s just someone who shows up with that extra coffee with your name on it....

All small things that can make a huge difference, if viewed for what they are - and not how they fit into a hierarchy of our concerns for the day.

It’s a lesson, that once learned, changes everything.

The little things ARE the big things.

It took me almost 50 years to realize that. And it might be the greatest thing I’ve ever learned.
