An Unbelievable Sunrise from The White Mountains

kanc sunrise

I've seen a lot of beautiful sunrises, but this one was different than any one of them.

I was at the top of the Kancamagus Highway, in Livermore NH - an hour before the sun rose last week. And as the moment drew closer- what started as a dash of red in the farthest reaches of the sky, blossomed into the most incredible sunrises I've ever seen.

The colors rolled across the sky, and kept changing from minute to minute thanks to quickly moving low clouds. The photo above showed the levels of color that appeared over a sunrise that never actually showed me the sun itself.

I know it may sound weird - but watching the colors change was like watching the heavens get painted by God. Now, I may not be the most religious guy in the world, but that's the best way I can describe it. And the coolest part?

My buddy (and fellow photog) Doug Harrington and I were the only ones there to see it.

In any sunrise, the color in the sky starts to change about an hour before the sun shows itself. Thats why- if you want to photograph a rise- you need to be in place an hour ahead of time. That way - you'll see the best color in the sky. Like in this photo - the sky light up before the sun ever touched the ground....

And here's one last one of the vista - after the sun rose -

It's one thing to see the sun come up, it's another to see it move over the landscape and change everything it touches. And if you compare the first and last photo - you can see it.

Seeing something like this affects the rest of my day. No, my week, actually. I always think of it as a reward that I get because I took the time to look. And the best part is - it's free, and you can do it too. All you have to do is look -

Hope you liked em -  and if you want to see more of my photos, check out www.kretchy.com.

Happy New Year-
