Home Alone: Resident Left Behind when Nursing Home Shuts Down

After a coronavirus outbreak infected dozens of residents and staff members, the Rosslyn Retirement Residence in Hamilton, Ontario closed its doors last Friday, relocating all of its residents to hospitals and other facilities. All except one, that is.

One of the residents, an elderly man, was apparently lost in the shuffle. After concerned family members told Rosslyn officials they couldn't locate him, the man was found more than 24 hours later, alone is his room at the home.

"This was clearly not something anybody would have intended to do," says Winnie Doyle, executive vice-president of St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, a local hospital that assisted in transferring residents. "It was a mistake and I heard from the family on Saturday that they were very concerned."

The unidentified man, who's suffering from COVID-19, has been taken to a nearby hospital, where he's listed in stable condition, Doyle says.

Would the family win if they filed a lawsuit against the nursing home? What's the most important thing you've forgotten when leaving for a trip?
