Bear-Related "Stand Your Ground' Measure Becomes Law Of The Land In Florida

(Tallahassee, FL)-- Florida's "Stand Your Ground Against Bears" law goes into effect today. State legislators say the law creates what amounts to a "get-out-of-jail-free card" for those who use deadly force when confronted by Florida's bears. Proponents of the new law say it enables residents and visitors to protect themselves without fear of prosecution. Opponents say the new law will accelerate that extinction of bears in the Sunshine State.

Audit Faults Security Company At Orange County Correctional Facilities

(Orlando, FL) -- The company hired to provide security at corrections facilities in Orange County is facing criticism after an audit. County comptroller Phil Diamond released the audit last week after reviewing the work of Allied Universal Security Services. The report found the company failed to train guards in adequate time, allowed new employees to work before they completed new hire requirements, didn't perform quarterly screenings and didn't meet staffing requirements at the Juvenile Assessment Center. Diamond tells Spectrum News 13 he hopes these problems will be resolved, and we'll have the best possible safety and security we can have.

Woman Crashes While Fleeing Police

(Tampa, FL) -- A Manatee County woman with a history of drunk driving is facing more charges after a crash in Hillsborough County. FHP says Bradenton's Sahai Flatts was drunk and fleeing from troopers when she hit a tree yesterday morning. A trooper spotted her on I-275 driving without her headlights on at 1:00 a.m., but when the trooper tried to pull her over, she kept going onto SR 589. Flatts allegedly reached a speed of 130 miles an hour and lost control and hit a tree after exiting on Linebaugh Ave. She was taken to the hospital and then placed under arrest. Flatts is charged with DUI and driving with a suspended license. The 25-year-old had her license suspended just last month for another DUI arrest.
