Paul Simon dealing with his 'Sounds of Silence'

Paul Simon is taking proactive steps to address the hearing deficiency in his left ear, a challenge that emerged during the recording of his 2023 album, ‘Seven Psalms.’  Simon shared, “Quite suddenly, I lost most of the hearing in my left ear, and nobody has an explanation for it. So everything became more difficult.” This unexpected loss has undoubtedly impacted his music-making process, but Paul remains determined to find a solution.

In a recent interview on CBS Mornings, Simon opened up about his frustrations and fears. “It was incredibly frustrating. I was very angry at first that this had happened. I guess what I’m most apprehensive about would be if I can’t hear well enough to really enjoy the act of making music," he said. Despite these challenges, Simon's passion for music continues to drive him forward. CBS cameras followed him to the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss in Palo Alto, California, where he explored the latest research and potential treatments.

While there has been a slight improvement in his condition, Simon is adjusting his approach to performing. Simon mentioned that he will focus on acoustic numbers because they are "much quieter," and he has decided to step away from performing louder songs like "You Can Call Me Al."
