Law Enforcement Update on New Orleans Attack

Local law enforcement officials around the country were expected to increase security around New Year's Day events following the deadly tragedy in New Orleans early Wednesday morning.

At least 10 people were killed and at least 35 were injured after a driver plowed a pickup truck into a crowd of New Year's revelers in the famous French Quarter of New Orleans. 

The male driver reportedly jumped out of the vehicle and opened fire on police after hitting the crowd in what police are calling an intentional attack and that was being investigated as a terrorist attack.

The shootout ended with the suspect dead at the scene. Police say 35 people were rushed to five hospitals across the city after suffering injuries from the attack.

The tragedy in New Orleans is now being investigated by the FBI as a terror attack and and at at Wednesday afternoon news conference, and FBI spokesperson said they do not believe he acted alone. The man is identified as a U.S; citizen who lived in the Houston area.

Fox News is identifying the suspect as 42-year-old Shamsud Din Jabbar. He was killed after exchanging gunfire with police officers. Two policemen were shot in the gun battle. Both are in stable condition.

Sources tell Fox News that when they searched the suspect’s truck they found a Glock handgun, a high-powered rifle and an ISIS flag. There are also reports that improvised explosive devices were found in the French Quarter.

The 2025 Sugar Bowl in New Orleans was postponed just hours before kickoff on Wednesday due to the tragedy and the area where it happened remained a crime scene and off limits. Allstate Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley spoke at a press conference with local and federal officials on Wednesday afternoon to confirm that the College Football Playoff quarterfinal game between Georgia and Notre Dame will be postponed for 24 hours.
