Improperly discarded fireworks are being blamed for extensive damage to the Jensen Beach boardwalk and Sand Dune Cafe in Jensen Beach.

Martin County Fire Rescue was called to the fire around 3:30 a.m. yesterday morning and spokesman Cory Pippin says foul play is not suspected.

"I think the intention there was probably good to throw away fireworks after they were used. The problem was, they didn't consider the fact that the fireworks were still a potential threat."

The fire caused damage to the boardwalk, bathrooms and the cafe as well as the surrounding area.

The damaged areas will remain closed until further notice.

The State Fire Marshal's Office says the blaze likely started in a nearby trash can.

Pippin tells CBS 12 News you should soak used fireworks for at least 15 minutes before discarding them.
