I’m sad to report there are no movies opening this weekend, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t stuff to do around town.
On FRIDAY night, a great Tom Petty tribute band called the PETTYBREAKERS will be at the Belly Up Tavern in SOLANA BEACH. About the only thing I didn’t like about them, was the distracting fact that I kept thinking the singer’s wig would fly off when he shook his head.
If you didn’t get enough drinkin’ and dancin’ on New Year’s Eve, DOWNTOWN at the Music Box, they’re having a STAYIN’ ALIVE DISCO DANCE PARTY, which is only $17. Bring all those gaudy necklaces and big wigs you use for those ‘70s theme parties you go to.
You’d think an event like that would work better for those that catch Saturday night fever. But on SATURDAY….
A Michael Jackson tribute show – WHO’S BAD – will be at the Magnolia in EL CAJON. It’s their 20th anniversary tour. They started up about 5 years before the real Jackson went up to do that moonwalk in the sky.
The KINGS OF LA JOLLA will be…no, not in La Jolla, but in OCEANSIDE, playing at the Pit Stop Diner, doing a Winter Dance Party, performing hit songs from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The music will fit this 50s diner perfectly.
A bit farther south, at the CASBAH, near the airport, for the swing dancers that are “feelin’ kinda lucky” – it’s BIG SANDY & HIS FLY-RITE BOYS. They’ve been doing their rockabilly and roots music for over 35 years.
SUNDAY doesn’t usually have a lot to offer, but I was excited to see that in the afternoon at SHERATON SAN DIEGO HOTEL AND MARINA, it’s WHITNEY SHAY. I recently saw her perform as Amy Winehouse in a show, and this local talent is amazing. This “Sea Sessions” show is on a huge yacht, with a lovely sunset, but…it’s a bit pricey, with tickets starting at $165.
If you’re not into partying on a rock but like more of the punk vibe, T.S.O.L. will be coming from Long Beach to NORTH PARK to play at the Observatory. Not sure how many of the original members from the 1978 line-up are involved, but they still draw a crowd.
A band that formed around the same time was the Stray Cats. I’ve seen their bass player LEE ROCKER many times, and he always puts on a great show, usually jumping onto his stand-up bass during a few solos. He’ll be playing at the Belly Up Tavern in SOLANA BEACH, so strut on over.
Now, if you’re still recovering from all the New Year’s parties, and since there aren’t any new films opening, you can always watch stuff at home.
On NETFLIX, there’s BLACK DOVES, a spy thriller with Kiera Knightley and Ben Whishaw. It’s getting rave reviews.
I’ve never seen SQUID GAME, but they’re back for season 2.
And over on AMAZON PRIME VIDEO, the always wonderful Margo Martindale gets a tasty starring role in THE STICKY, which is a dark comedy about the great Canadian maple syrup heist. Ha! You thought it would just be Jerry Seinfeld that had all the fun with his pop-tarts.
