'Dogs outpaced by Cowgirls in conference home opener

FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State women's basketball fell to Wyoming in the conference home opener on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center, 68-59.

Leading the Bulldogs on her eighth double-figure game of the season was Mariah Elohim on 18 points shooting 41% from the field. Maria Konstantinidou with a new career-high 11 points and Kylee Fox 10 points.

How it happened

Allyson Fertig owned the first points of the day however a quick response from Saga Ukkonen evened the score. Cowgirls' moved on to a deep 8-0 scoring run off of Fresno State's near three-minute scoring drought aided by three turnovers. A drought that was snapped by Fox with a jumper. Elohim worked on a solo 5-0 run with a deep three off a double screen and jumper. Mia Jacobs saw her first points of the day with a reverse layup. Fresno State continued to put the pressure on Wyoming after a 4-4 run to get within five in the final two minutes of the first, 13-18. Wyoming closed on a 4-0 to make it an eight-point game after ten, 22-13.

Elohim appeared on the ball first with a three-pointer. Wyoming moved on a 5-0 run. Steal and score is Fox's forte, taking it coast to coast for a fast break layup. Laney Amundsen made the most of her first ten seconds on the court, right on the money with a deep three. 'Dogs hit a groove playing off a 5-3 run. Bulldogs' had it within one in the final minute of the first half but the Cowgirls quickly shut it down with a three-pointer from Barnes. Fresno State lucked out with a travel from Wyoming's Barnes as the buzzer went off. Fresno State outscored Wyoming in the second period, 20-15 but trailed by four, 37-33.

At the half Fresno State shot 53% (15-of-28) from the field and saw ten points off of nine Wyoming turnovers.

A 6-2 run in favor of Wyoming opened the second half. Bulldogs struggled to find the basket in the opening minutes, missing four of their last field goal attempts. Konstantinidou put in a jumper to snap another three-minute scoring drought. Danae Powell joined in on the scoring to chip the Cowgirls lead down to six. Fox follows through in the paint for another basket on a Bulldog 6-0 run. Fresno State held Wyoming scoreless from the field for over eight minutes. The Cowgirl's last field goal came at 8:29, earning their last seven points from the charity line. Powell laid in the second chance shot, off Fox's steal to put the Bulldogs within four going into the final ten.

Trailing by four, Fresno State struggled to keep up with Wyoming in the opening of the fourth quarter. Wyoming worked with an 8-0 run in just under two minutes to extend their lead by 11. Travel on Wyoming's Fertig held the Cowgirl's chance at extending their lead at bay. Elohim made the best of the turnover with a layup and Powell from the paint. Cowgirls' final shot at the line was 1-2 to finalize a nine-point lead over the Bulldogs.

Wyoming was led by Tess Barnes with a career-high 24 points and Allyson Fertig with 21 points. The Cowgirls improve to 2-0 in conference play.
