Reaction has poured in from social media and Donald Trump himself over the sentencing announcement from Judge Juan Merchan into the New York v. Trump case.
President-elect Trump slammed Judge Merchan for denying his request to toss his guilty verdict in the case, which was brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Trump said the move is part of the continued "political witch hunt by Biden and the DOJ" and that Democrats "just want to see if they can get a pound of flesh because every case has failed."
"I did absolutely nothing wrong," Trump said in a post to Truth Social following the announcement of the sentencing on Friday.
Sentencing has been set for Jan. 10, just 10 days before Inauguration Day. Trump is not required to appear for sentencing in person and can appear virtually. Merchan said there would be no imposition of a sentence including incarceration, jail time, a fine, or probation. It's likely going to be a sentence of an "unconditional discharge."
Trump called Merchan "a totally conflicted judge who is doing the work for the Democrat Party because every other case has failed."
"There has never been a judge as conflicted as this one," Trump added. "There was no case. He created a case out of nothing because he wanted my political opponent to win."
Merchan also imposed a gag order over Trump during the trial and it is still in effect preventing Trump from making public statements about witnesses or counsel in relation to the case.
