(Columbia, SC) -- South Carolina students returning from winter break this week are putting their phones away.
That's because of a new law in place that went into effect January 1st, which prohibits students from holding or using their devices until dismissal.
School districts are allowed to decide whether that ban will extend to buses and athletic events.
The systems must have rulings in place about phones, or face a cut in school funding.
