FPL: Ways To Save While Keeping Your Home Warm During The Cold Snap

Tonight is expected to be the coldest yet and you may be thinking about ways to stay warm. But FPL Spokeswoman Shelley Ragsdale says there is something to consider before using your A/C unit's heat function.

"Heating your home can require two to three times more energy than cooling your home with the air conditioner."

She says that if you do run your heat, turn the thermostat no lower than 68 degrees. Ragsdale says every degree below 68 will save you about five percent on heating costs.

You can also try to warm up your home during the day by opening your blinds or curtains, assuming it's sunny outside. That will keep the cold out but let the warmth from the sun in.

Another option is to use a space heater, but make sure to operate it in an open space and keep children and pets at least three feet away and turn it off when you leave the room.

Using a space heater will add about $3 per day on average to your electric bill.
