A Surprising Number Of Americans Carry Spare Undies With Them

A lot of Americans like to have backup, at least when it comes to their underwear. It turns out, nearly half of us carry a spare pair with them, just in case they need them, according to a new survey. And while it might seem like overkill to keep extra undies on hand at all times, 70% of those who do have needed them at some point.

The survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults, evenly divided by gender, also reveals:

  • The situations people would need those backup underwear include if they have an accident (39%), knowing they’ll be changing clothes at some point during the day (37%), or they’re just accident-prone and likely to spill something on themselves (18%).
  • Other respondents say spare undies would come in handy after a sweaty workout, on a really hot day, or if they have an upset stomach.
  • Carrying an extra pair is more common for younger generations, with 60% of Gen Z and 57% of millennials admitting they have “in case of emergency” underwear.
  • The research also uncovers just how long people keep their old underwear in rotation, with most holding onto them for three years, on average.
  • But a tenth of those surveyed manage to wear theirs for at least six years.
  • When it comes to bras, women keep those for an average of four years, but 8% confess they have some that are well-past their prime and at least 10 years old.
  • As for the rest of their wardrobe, on average, people keep button-up shirts and blouses for three and a half years. T-shirts, pants, jeans, shorts, and skirts tend to be kept for around three years.
  • The average person owns just four pairs of “good” underwear and only three “good” bras.”
  • The thing is, people aren’t always good at recognizing when it’s time to retire an undergarment. It takes two holes in the item, on average, for people to start considering replacing it.
