The Capital Region of New York is experiencing a significant surge in flu cases, with Saratoga County reporting the highest number of infections at 136 during the week ending December 28. Albany County followed with 106 cases, and Schenectady County reported 75 cases. This increase in flu cases has put a strain on local hospitals, prompting officials to urge residents to use urgent care centers for non-serious illnesses.

According to Times Union, the rise in flu cases is part of a broader trend across New York State. The state Health Department has reported over 24,500 flu cases in the last week of December, with more than 1,000 hospitalizations. State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald declared influenza prevalent across the state and urged New Yorkers to get vaccinated.

The New York State Department of Health emphasized the importance of flu vaccinations, especially for those at higher risk, such as the elderly, young children, and pregnant women. Preventative measures like hand washing, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home when sick are also recommended to curb the spread of the virus.

As the flu season continues, local hospitals, including Albany Medical Center and St. Peter’s Hospital, have implemented visitor restrictions to manage the influx of patients. Dr. Christopher Guzda, regional director for St. Peter’s Health Partners emergency services, noted that the surge in patients is due to seasonal illnesses like the flu, RSV, and COVID-19. He advised those with mild symptoms to seek care from primary providers or urgent care centers to keep emergency departments available for severe cases.
