TAMPA -- Federal and local law enforcement join forces and bring charges against two people in a jury scam targeting Floridians.
Florida Middle District U.S. Attorney Roger Handberg says one of the suspects allegedly ran the scam from a Georgia prison using a smuggled phone.
Handberg says inmate Anthony Sanders and his outside accomplice Marlita Andrews, both 28, convinced a Sarasota woman that she was facing arrest, telling her to go to a "Bonding Transition Center" and hand over $12,000. The "B T C" was actually a Bitcoin ATM. Detectives say Sanders was using a phone smuggled into prison, perhaps using a drone.
Handberg says there may be more victims, and he's expecting more indictments. FBI agents and Sarasota Sheriff's Office detectives discovered that around $80,000 had been moved through a phone belonging to Andrews.
