SAUK COUNTY, Wis. (WKOW) -- The Sauk County Sheriff's Office is seeking new tips as it reexamines the 1977 disappearance of Robert Christian.
On September 16, 1977, Christian left his home in Madison and went to the Baraboo area to meet a friend to bow hunt, according to the Sheriff's Office. When he didn't show up at his friend's house, relatives started searching for him.
Christian's car, a 1977 AMC Hornet, was found abandoned at a radio tower site with its wheels and battery missing. Authorities say the car was unlocked and most of his hunting gear and personal belongings were gone.
A ground search was launched for Christian, which included bloodhounds and an Army National Guard helicopter, but he was never found.
About a week after his disappearance, the Sauk County Sheriff's Office got a tip that led investigators to a quarry just south of the Badger Army Ammunition Plant. There, they found four old tires and hubcaps that would have matched the hubcaps from Christian's car.
Authorities say it's unclear if the stripping of the car and Christian's disappearance are connected.
The Sauk County Sheriff's Office says a witness came forward and said that on the night Christian disappeared, she was visiting a friend near Durward's Glen Retreat Center and encountered a car in her friend's driveway. The car matched the description of the AMC Hornet and had the same license plate.
"The young male driver of the car matched Robert’s description and told the woman something like “I’m looking for my friend. I’m supposed to meet my friend.” The young man said he must be at the wrong place and then drove away to the east, toward Durward’s Glen Road. The young man was never definitively identified," the Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post about the case.
