Miami, FL - A fire broke out in a parking garage at Miami International Airport (MIA) on Wednesday, causing significant damage to multiple vehicles and temporarily disrupting airport operations.
The incident occurred around 11:35 a.m. in the Flamingo Garage between the first and second floors.
According to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Acting North District Chief Rogelio Vandamas, the blaze originated in four vehicles and spread, damaging eight additional vehicles nearby.
Aerial footage captured thick black smoke pouring out of the parking structure as firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
Vandamas reported that the fire was brought under control quickly, with no injuries reported.
Fire crews spent additional time ventilating the area to clear the lingering smoke.
Officials confirmed that all the vehicles involved in the fire were gas-powered, and no electric vehicles were impacted.
Efforts are underway to contact the affected vehicle owners, while owners of unaffected cars have been allowed to retrieve their vehicles.
Fire investigators are currently working to determine the cause of the fire and its origin.
In addition, structural engineers are inspecting the garage to assess any potential damage caused by the intense heat and smoke.
The Flamingo Garage was closed for several hours following the fire.
While it reopened Wednesday evening, the ramps where the fire occurred, as well as the levels directly above and below, remain closed for further inspection.
Temporary closures also impacted the Dolphin Garage entrance and the people mover train connecting MIA to the rental car center, both of which have since resumed normal operations.
This incident underscores the importance of fire safety measures in high-traffic public spaces.
Travelers are advised to remain aware of ongoing closures at the Flamingo Garage while investigations and repairs continue.
