A custody deputy from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office is recovering after being assaulted at the Syracuse Justice Center on New Year's Day (January 1). The incident occurred when the deputy entered the cell of 24-year-old Nyitaire Nelson to remove garbage. Nelson allegedly attacked the deputy, striking him multiple times with closed fists.

The assault resulted in the deputy sustaining a concussion, as well as facial and back injuries. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Emergency Response Team, along with additional deputies, responded swiftly to the scene and restrained Nelson, bringing the assault to an end. The injured deputy was taken to Upstate Medical Center, where he received treatment and was later released.

Nelson has been charged with felony assault in the second degree and remains in custody at the Syracuse Justice Center. The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office has emphasized its commitment to maintaining the safety of both its staff and the incarcerated.

According to CNY Central, the Sheriff's Office is taking the necessary steps to ensure such incidents are minimized in the future. WSYR-TV also reported on the swift response by the emergency team to control the situation.
