Syracuse police have taken charge of the investigation into a carbon monoxide leak at the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School. The incident occurred on Tuesday (January 7) and resulted in several individuals needing treatment for carbon monoxide exposure. The leak was traced back to an improperly vented kitchen appliance.
Initially, the school claimed that a carbon monoxide detector was present in the cafeteria, but later confirmed it was only a smoke detector. The school is now reinspecting all kitchen equipment and safety devices to ensure compliance with safety standards. According to a report by CNY Central, the Syracuse Fire Department and the City Division of Code Enforcement found that carbon monoxide alarms were missing in the kitchen and cafeteria, though present in other parts of the building.
The school remains closed until additional carbon monoxide alarms are installed and a safety certification for the kitchen equipment is submitted. The school has expressed its commitment to transparency and the safety of its students and staff. The investigation continues, with updates to be provided as more information becomes available.
