In Defense Of David Muir: He's Not "Playing Fireman", He's Reporting News

ABC World News Tonight anchor David Muir opened himself up to a lot of criticism when he reported live from the scene of the southern California wildfires Wednesday. Muir was reporting from the Palisades fire when he turned and pointed at the carnage behind him. As he did so, he inadvertently revealed he had a clothespin securing the back of the ABC windbreaker he was wearing. Critics of Muir suggested he was showing off his physique by wearing a jacket that was made to look form-fitting. WOR Morning Show host Larry Mendte, however, came to Muir’s defense. As someone who has done TV reporting on the scene, Mendte was quick to indicate why he found nothing wrong with Muir’s report.

Mendte was especially critical of podcaster Megyn Kelly, who tore into Muir. “I’ve always liked Megyn Kelly but shut up. Seriously, shut up. You were just looking for content for your podcast and taking on David Muir, who you consider a liberal, is why you went after him. He went out to the fires, and if you went out to the fires back when you were a TV anchor, before you lost your job, you would have done the exact same thing. And the reason he’s being criticized, as [producer] Natalie [Vacca] alluded to, is because he had a windbreaker on. You know, that’s not ‘dressed like a fireman,’ by the way. He had a windbreaker on, and he turned, and you can see that the windbreaker was clipped.”
