Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro visited the Pennsylvania Farm Show earlier this week to discuss the state's agricultural industry and the ongoing bird flu outbreak. Agriculture plays a significant role in Pennsylvania's economy, contributing $132 billion annually and supporting 600,000 jobs. Governor Shapiro emphasized the importance of providing resources to farmers to maintain this vital sector.
During his visit, Shapiro addressed the challenges posed by the bird flu outbreak, which threatens poultry flocks across the state. To assist affected farmers, the state has established a $60 million fund to support those whose flocks are devastated by the virus. Shapiro's administration has implemented proactive measures to protect the dairy and poultry industries, including quarantines and testing protocols.
Governor Shapiro highlighted the state's efforts to remain a national leader in agriculture through initiatives like the $10 million Agriculture Innovation Grant Program. These programs focus on sustainable farming, technology adoption, and avian influenza mitigation.
Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding praised the administration's swift actions to safeguard livestock and livelihoods. Pennsylvania has been on high alert since the outbreak began in 2022, and no infections have been reported in commercial poultry since February 2024.
The Farm Show, themed "Powering Pennsylvania," runs from January 4 to 11 and showcases the state's agricultural diversity. It provides a platform for farmers to connect with experts and learn about biosecurity practices to protect their farms.
