Instagram is about to get a facelift, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. By the end of 2025, Meta plans to roll out some big updates that might make you love or hate the platform even more—because, let’s be real, that’s how we all feel about Instagram these days.
Story Highlights Update
First up, Story Highlights. Those cute little bubbles under our profiles? They’re moving to a dedicated tab marked by a heart icon between the grid and Reels tabs. Instagram head honcho Adam Mosseri even admitted this change might be "contentious." Translation: people are definitely going to have opinions.
Trial Reels
Then there are "trial reels." Instead of uploading a reel for your entire follower base, you’ll have the option to make it visible to a random group of users. Great for testing out your cringiest dance moves or experimental content. Talk about low-pressure posting—unless you’re the random user stuck watching it.
Content Reset Feature
Now, this one sounds promising: a content reset button. This feature lets you wipe the slate clean on your recommendations and start fresh. You can find it under "content preferences" in settings, and it’s designed to improve what pops up in your Explore, Reels, and Feed tabs. No more weirdly specific ads for things you swear you didn’t Google but maybe talked about once near your phone.
In short, Instagram is doing what Instagram does best: changing things up and leaving us to figure out whether these updates are revolutionary or just another reason to scroll mindlessly. Stay tuned for the chaos—and maybe start drafting your hot takes now.
