The Central New York region is experiencing a significant increase in flu cases, with Onondaga County reporting the highest number of illnesses at 305 during the week ending January 4. Oneida County follows with 222 cases, and Oswego County has 109 cases. Alongside the flu, COVID-19 and norovirus cases are also on the rise, prompting health officials to urge residents to take precautions.

In Oneida County, health officials have noted an uptick in respiratory illnesses since the New Year. Daniel W. Gilmore, Ph.D., MPH, Oneida County Director of Health, emphasized the importance of protecting oneself and family members during the winter season. He recommended good handwashing practices, avoiding sick individuals, and getting vaccinated as key preventive measures.

For those who become ill, staying home or wearing a mask when going out is advised. Mild symptoms include persistent cough, fever, and shortness of breath. More serious symptoms, such as severe shortness of breath or chest pain, require immediate medical attention.

Oneida County health officials also highlighted the increased risk for certain groups, including pregnant individuals, older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems or underlying conditions like asthma. They advise consulting a doctor early for anti-viral treatments to reduce symptoms and illness duration.
