The Schenectady City School District is working to reduce delays caused by a new weapons detection system at the high school. Since its implementation on Monday (January 6), the system has led to significant wait times for students entering the building. The District Climate and Safety Director reports that students experience an average wait time of 15 to 20 minutes during peak periods. To address this, the district plans to adjust bus schedules to ease congestion.

According to NEWS10, the superintendent, Dr. Carlos Cotto Jr., noted that the delays have decreased since the system's first day. Initially, students missed the entire first period, but the wait time has since reduced to about 15 minutes. The district is also encouraging students to keep their belongings in their bags to speed up the process.

The weapons detection system has successfully prevented several prohibited items from entering the school. Dr. Cotto Jr. emphasized the importance of creating a welcoming environment while ensuring student safety. He advised parents to ensure their children arrive by 8:10 a.m. to allow enough time for entry.

The district continues to refine the process to minimize delays and maintain a safe school environment.
