Update: Winter Storm Watch Issued for Tri-State
The tri-state area is bracing for a wintry weekend, with snow expected to arrive on Sunday (January 19) followed by a significant drop in temperatures. According to the National Weather Service, the region will experience a brief respite from the cold, with temperatures reaching into the 40s by Saturday, accompanied by rain in the afternoon. However, the cold will return on Sunday, bringing snow in the afternoon and evening.
Northern New Jersey and the Poconos could see two to four inches of snow, while Orange County, New York, might receive up to three inches. The National Weather Service warns that the exact amount of snowfall will depend on the track and strength of a low-pressure system moving through the area. Following the snow, temperatures will plummet, with highs in the teens and lows in the single digits by Tuesday (January 21). Wind chills could make it feel even colder, dropping below zero in some areas.
The cold snap is expected to last through the week, with Tuesday being the coldest day. The FOX Forecast Center reports that a polar vortex will bring temperatures as much as 45 degrees below average, making this January one of the coldest in years for the eastern United States. Residents are advised to prepare for the extreme cold, which could lead to hypothermia, frostbite, and infrastructure issues like frozen pipes.
