Another day of traffic crashes, freeway closures in West Michigan

WEST MICHIGAN, Mich. -- It has been a week of snowy weather, arctic temperatures and slippery roads.

Consumers Energy reported on its online Outage Map that crews needed about three hours to restore power to about 1,000 customers after a car crashed into a power pole Thursday morning in Grand Rapids.

It happened along US-131 north of Burton Street around 8 o'clock. The northbound lanes of the freeway were shut down for a while and traffic backed up southbound, as well. The power outage also impacted the Grandville Avenue corridor in the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood.

There was no early report of any injuries.

Farther to the south, numerous crashes and slide-offs on northbound I-196 led the Allegan County Sheriff's Office to shut down the freeway around 10:30 Thursday morning. Lieutenant Brandon Berens told WOOD Radio a semi-truck jackknifed near the Douglas exit.

"Looking at our call board, we've got over 10 vehicles in the ditch, crashes, etcetera, on I-196," he said in a phone interview around 11 a.m.

The ACSO reported that the freeway had reopened around noontime Thursday.

Many multi-vehicle crashes were reported throughout the week, including a couple of fatal ones on US-131 Monday and Tuesday. Here were some more reported Wednesday: Freeway reopens in Ottawa County after multiple crashes, fire | Newsradio WOOD 1300 and 106.9 FM | WOOD Radio Local News
