Delray Beach Police are reviewing the agency's investigation into an incident in 2023 involving the firefighter who drove a fire truck into the path of a Brightline train last month.
Police Chief Russ Mager says the integrity of their investigations is paramount, "especially when they involve public safety personnel."
He wants to ensure protocols were followed and no procedural errors occurred when looking into a crash involving firefighter David Wyatt, who crashed his Jeep along Atlantic Avenue. The vehicle struck several signs before colliding with a tree in a median.
A witness says Wyatt "suddenly lost control and veered over the median." An officer noted that he had red eyes and a head laceration but was not slurring after the crash and no roadside sobriety test was conducted due to Wyatt's medical condition, therefore no probable cause was found to arrest him for DUI.
Police have released bodycam video from the scene of that crash.
He did wind up with a citation for careless driving and then had his license suspended when he didn't attend traffic school.
Wyatt was at the wheel of a Delray fire truck last month that collided with a train, injuring three firefighters and 12 people on the train. His license had been reinstated at the time.
