The American Red Cross is hosting a blood drive today at Rivers Casino and Resort in Schenectady from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This event is part of National Blood Donor Month, a time when the Red Cross emphasizes the need for blood donations, especially during the winter months when supplies often dwindle.
The Red Cross is partnering with the NFL to offer donors a chance to win a trip for two to Super Bowl 60 in Santa Clara, California, on February 8. This initiative aims to encourage more people to donate blood, as the organization is currently distributing blood products faster than they are receiving donations. This shortage is partly due to challenges from snow, ice, and holiday schedules, which have impacted collection efforts.
Saquon Barkley, a professional football player and blood donor, is helping to promote the campaign. He shared, "I gave blood once in college and that was the only time I had ever been asked to give, until the Red Cross reached out this fall." The Red Cross hopes that this partnership will inspire more people to donate and help maintain a stable blood supply.
Donors can schedule an appointment by visiting RedCrossBlood.org. The blood drive is open to individuals who meet certain health and age requirements, and all blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients in need.
