BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Harbor Now held their annual Harbor Walk on Tuesday, showing off numerous ice sculptures.
“The idea really was, how can we get people to walk from place to place,” Director of Programs at BHN Rebecca Smerling said.
The non-profit has organized this event for 12 years. This year, they spread 40 sculptures all across the walk in honor of the 40th anniversary of the Boston Harborwalk trail.
“People in Massachusetts, they love their ice sculptures. This is actually the largest ice sculpture stroll on the east coast,” Smerling said. “Today we have 40 ice sculptures that are spanning all the way from Revere down to Nubian Square.”

While Rebecca mentioned that most of the statues were made in November, some were carved on the day of the walk, such as the harbor seal sculpture located in Martin’s Park.
Jay Bluck, the ice sculptor, talked about how the warmer weather on Tuesday was both nice to work in while adding a potential complication to carving the ice statue.
“With weather like this, this will be pretty refreshing actually,” Bluck said. “Soon as it comes out of the freezer, it’s going to start melting, so that kind of puts a little onus on us to go faster and to get there before it’s melted.”
Bluck said the statue would take 3 hours to finish, but that didn't stop onlookers, who were happy to watch him carve the piece. Some received little chunks of ice from him as First Night souvenirs.
