BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Blue Ridge Beef is recalling over a thousand pounds of its cat food after a sample in Massachusetts tested positive for salmonella.
The cat food being recalled is the 2 lb. bag of Blue Ridge Beef Kitten Mix, sold between July 18 and July 26 of last year.
Number labels on the recalled food, which are on the end of bags, are Lot N25-0716 and UPC 854298001436.
The Massachusetts Department of Agriculture Resources found that a sample of the food tested positive for salmonella in December, after a customer complained that their animal was sick.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, pets with salmonella may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting.
Humans that handled the contaminated food could also be at risk. Human symptoms of salmonella include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever, according to the FDA.
Along with Massachusetts, the recalled food was sold in Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia.
