Man dies after ingesting drugs in Colleton County, official says

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WSAV) — A 21-year-old man died on Wednesday after officers learned that he had ingested drugs prior to arriving at the Colleton County Jail to be booked, an official said.

On Jan. 7, the man was taken to the Colleton County Jail by the Walterboro Police Department after being arrested during a traffic stop.

Shortly after the booking process began, officers discovered that he had ingested drugs before he was brought to the jail.

A Colleton County Detention Officer overheard the man talking about ingesting the drugs with another inmate and requested the Jail Nurse to examine him, the Colleton County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) representative said.

He admitted to the Jail Nurse that he had consumed illegal narcotics, and he was transported to the Colleton County Medical Center.

The man died Wednesday afternoon due to the toxicity of the drugs, they said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) was called in to investigate and the CCSO Office of Professional Standards will be conducting an internal review.
