Look Simba, Everything The Light Touches Is The Geek Freak of the Week

Fellow geeks and nerds! Welcome yet again to another issue of the Geek Freak of the Week. We are one week out from another Disney remake of the Lion King & the biggest event of the year...International Comic Con in San Diego!

There are some fantastic sources for live coverage. I tend to gravitate towards IGN's feed because they seem to cover the most, have inclusive interviews, and talk about the breaking news as it unfolds. Once they wrap up things for the night, Conan O'Brien take over on TBS and has a show taped live from Comic-Con. It's really the best four days of your nerd life. So, let's sit back, relax and dive right into things with the Geek Freak of the Week!

Conan Returns To The Con!

Our favorite red headed late night host has made this a staple for his show and brand for the last few years. Although, this year is the first time he is going to San Diego with his shows new format. Back in January, the program went from an hour to just thirty minutes. I would love to speculate on that more but we all know the real reason Conan gets attention at Comic-Con. It's because of the Pop Funkos! Take a look at what this years line up....

I want them all! Here's the break down:

  • Conan as Pennywise the Clown from IT
  • Conan as Woody from Toy Story
  • Conan as Jon Snow from Game of Thrones
  • Conan as Iron Man from Avengers: Endgame

How does one win these? If you're not sure this is what happens. Every episode that airs during Comic-Con there will be a code that Conan will give out. That will be your ticket to go online and grab one. It's tough. You can wait until they end up on Ebay or some other place online, but they are always super expensive.

Side note: I did win one last year. Here's what happened, I entered to win one night during Conan-Con and I got a message back saying I was out of luck. Then, about two months later I received an email saying they had some left over. I eventually received it in the mail around December. So, if you do win, don't expect it shipped via Amazon Prime. Which one was it? Conan as Hellboy. I'm pretty sure it was because no one wanted it and that's why they had some "left over".

You could make it easier for yourself and just go to Comic Con and attend the show. Each member of the studio audience gets one the night they are there.

Speaking of con's...

I Need Morphincon Power, NOW!

Get the helmets and spandex ready. Labor Day weekend 2020 Power Morphicon Returns! New location this time around. Instead of being across the street from Disneyland in Anaheim, it's moving to Pasadena.

What can we expect from this? A few things will definitely be talked about.

  1. The introduction of the cast for the next season of the show
  2. The next wave of Hasbro's Lightning Collection figures will be announced
  3. An update from Boom! Studios on the comics

Also, since it's a year out, maybe, just MAYBE, this will be the place we get the announcement for the next movie. It looks like they are getting close. It was reported via Power Rangers Now twitter on July 11th that a sequel to the 2017 film is out of the question. Looks like Hasbro will move forward with a reboot. You can read that news here.

Yes, this is sad news. The cast and story were great but it was a box office bomb. At least there is no speculation now, a reboot is coming and I can't wait for a new movie!

PS...go to Amazon and buy all the 2017 stuff NOW before prices go up!

HBO...Maximize!

That was a Beast Wars reference...that's all I can think of when I see the name of this thing. Okay, so it looks like Warner Media (the overlords of DC and Warner Brothers) are getting into the streaming game because...why the hell not. Introducing HBO Max. This thing is loaded with content and will definitely be going head-to-head with Disney Plus. HBO Max has movies from Warner Brothers entire library, the oldies from Turner Classic Movies, all the Harry Potter movies, and DC Entertainments collection of films both live action and animated.

Does this mean the end of DCUniverse? Is Titans, StarGirl, Doom Patrol, and Young Justice all getting canceled or moved over to this new service? IS THIS GOING TO COST MORE?! Well, before we all freak out, according to this tweet everything is fine with your subscription to DCUniverse. My spidey-sense tells me that won't last very long. The whole point of this HBO Max is to go against Disney's streaming service and DCUniverse has most of the superhero films and series that drive a lot of people to wanting it. I can see them first integrating it, then blowing it up completely. All hail HBO Max.

Wait Here...

If you've caught any of the Wizarding Weekends on Syfy and USA recently, you will have seen a commercial (or five) for this new attraction at Universal Studios. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventures (holy cricket that's a mouth full) is open and ready for you to take a ride. Universal Orlando's tweeted a video of what to expect when you are waiting in line. Hey, at least you are distracted while you bake in the hot sun and humidity!

Not sure about you...but roller coasters make me queazy so we'll end here. I should prepare you...next week is going to be intense with San Diego Comic-Con. A ton of news and announcements will be made so make sure you follow me on twitter (MazOfRadio) for all the latest updates.

Don't forget to check out the little brother to the Geek Freak of the Week...the podcast version is available now on the free iHeart Radio app or anywhere else you get your podcasts from. Until next week, I'm Maz and that's the Geek Freak of the Week!
