Hurricane Beryl made landfall this morning near Matagorda, Texas. The storm was packing maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. The eye is expected to track just to the west of Houston and southeast of College Station as it moves north.

Some areas could receive 5 to 10 inches of rain. Tornadoes are also a risk.

Now that Beryl is moving inland, it should quickly weaken, with the system becoming a tropical storm in the next few hours and a tropical depression in a little over 24 hours.

Gov. Greg Abbott is directing 39 agencies with the Texas Emergency Management Council to prepare for Hurricane Beryl. The State Emergency Operations Center will be staffed 24-7 as the storm approaches. The 39 agencies include the Texas Division of Emergency Management, the state police, the National Guard, TxDOT, Parks and Wildlife, the Salvation Army, and the Red Cross.

There are more than 120 Texas counties under Acting Governor Dan Patrick’s disaster declaration.

Power outages are being reported as Hurricane Beryl pushes through Texas. As of 6:30 a.m., CenterPoint Energy is reporting more than 750,000 homes and businesses are without power.

Hundreds of flights into and out of Houston are canceled or delayed as Hurricane Beryl bears down on the region. More than 500 flights have been canceled out of Bush International Airport and more than 120 flights out of Hobby Airport, according to tracker Flight Aware.

Key Messages:

1. There is a continuing danger of life-threatening storm surge inundation along the coast of Texas from Mesquite Bay to Sabine Pass, including Matagorda Bay and Galveston Bay. Residents in those areas should follow any advice given by local officials.

2. Beryl is bringing damaging hurricane-force winds to portions of the Texas coast this morning. A Hurricane Warning is in effect from Mesquite Bay to Port Bolivar.

3. Considerable flash and urban flooding is expected today into tonight across portions of the middle and upper Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas. Minor to isolated major river flooding is also expected.

4. Rip currents will cause life-threatening beach conditions through Tuesday across much of the Gulf Coast. Beachgoers should heed warning flags and the advice of lifeguards and local officials before venturing into the water.
