A wild scene unfolded in a Maine courtroom on Wednesday (September 11) when a man convicted of aggravated assault against a one-year-old child tried to flee.

Nicholas Carter, 31, managed to jump over a bar while still handcuffed and rushed out the rear door of the second-floor courtroom in Skowhegan. Surveillance cameras captured Carter running through the hallway and dodging several people who tried to stop him.

He managed to make it outside as multiple people chased after him. Once he was outside, Carter ran through the parking lot and into a yard across the street.

He didn't get much further as he appeared to trip and fall. He was then quickly detained by two members of the jury and a police officer. He was taken back into custody and is being charged with escape.

Carter will be sentenced for his conviction of assaulting a one-year-old in the coming weeks.
