West Michigan's first radio station to celebrate 100th anniversary Thursday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- On Sept. 16, 1924, WOOD Radio became West Michigan's first radio station. To celebrate the 100th anniversary, WOOD Radio will host a special live broadcast from its studios in downtown Grand Rapids on Thursday.

West Michigan's Morning News host Steve Kelly says there will be some special guests on the program. Some legendary voices from the station's past will be interviewed. And there will be a special proclamation (see attachment) from the City of Grand Rapids and recognition from Mayor Rosalynn Bliss. Throughout the rest of the year, WOOD Radio will celebrate with more special guests and interviews to shine a light on the accomplishment.

WOOD Radio first signed on as WEBK in 1924. According to Wikipedia, the station's original owners were supported by the Furniture Manufacturers Association of Grand Rapids. The suggested the station chance its call letters to WOOD, to reflect Grand Rapids' reputation as "The Furniture City."

The 20,000-watt station operates at 1300 AM and 106.9 FM.
