Update:
Standoff appears to be underway in Darlington County.

Late Thursday night, a McBee police officer was shot while responding to an incident on 11th Street near McBee High School, according to Chesterfield County Sheriff Cambo Streater. The officer, who was conducting a traffic stop near the school’s Agricultural Building, is currently being treated for his injuries. His exact condition has not been released at this time.

The Chesterfield County School District issued a statement to clarify the situation, emphasizing that the shooting did not occur at McBee High School itself. “Rumors have been circulating that a shooting took place at McBee High School and those reports are false. The incident took place near the high school but was not related to McBee High School itself,” the statement read. This clarification aims to dispel any misinformation and ensure the community understands the true nature of the incident.

Sheriff Streater mentioned that his deputies are actively assisting in the investigation until the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) arrives on the scene to take the lead. The involvement of SLED underscores the seriousness of the situation and the need for specialized investigative resources.

Earlier this morning, SLED issued a Blue Alert, a critical notification system designed to rapidly disseminate information to the public about suspects who have seriously injured or killed law enforcement officers. The Blue Alert identified the person of interest as Alston Modlin, a 27-year-old white male, approximately 5’ 11" and 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. Modlin was last seen driving a white 2023 Toyota Tacoma with the tag number KRF577 and a LEER sticker on the back window. He was last spotted traveling westbound at 6:01 AM in Florence, SC. If you come in contact with the person of interest, please do not confront this individual, but notify authorities of this person and his whereabouts as he is considered armed and dangerous.

The issuance of a Blue Alert indicates the high level of threat posed by the suspect and the urgency in apprehending him. The public is urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information related to Modlin to the authorities immediately. Sheriff Streater’s office and SLED are working closely to ensure the suspect is apprehended swiftly and safely.

Our media partner, ABC 15 has reached out to the McBee Police Chief to gather more details about what led up to the shooting. As the investigation unfolds, more information is expected to be released to the public. The community remains on high alert, and local law enforcement agencies are taking all necessary precautions to ensure public safety.
