NYC To Transform Fifth Avenue

Mayor Eric Adams has announced plans to reduce traffic on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan while opening it up for more pedestrians.

The idea is to expand sidewalks and to add more seating areas, lighting and trees on the busy street. The number of traffic lanes would also be reduced from five to three.

“Right now, 70 percent of the people on Fifth Avenue are pedestrians, but they can only utilize less than half the space," Mayor Adams said.

He said this is one of the busiest stretches in Manhattan, with 23,000 people walking in the area during the busy holiday season. Adams says it doesn't make sense that people are "cramming like sardines into constrained sidewalks."
