An Uber Eats driver is being hailed as a hero after he rescued a woman from her burning home in Vista, California. Nas Mohamed was on his early morning delivery route when he smelled smoke and followed it to a mobile home engulfed in flames.
Upon arriving at the scene, Mohamed began knocking on the door and windows of the home. A man who lived in the home informed him that his wife and their two cats were still inside. Mohamed heard the woman's cries for help and bravely entered the burning home to rescue her.
"The fire was surrounding her. So, yeah. And I went inside. I started looking for her, and I kept saying, ‘Talk to me! Talk to me!’ That was the worst part because I was breathing, you know, while I'm talking to her," Mohamed told KNSD.
As the smoke began to overpower him, first responders arrived just in time to assist Mohamed in lifting the woman out of the window and saving one of the cats. Mohamed, who suffered injuries from the smoke and fire, was also taken to the hospital.
Despite his injuries, Mohamed expressed relief upon hearing the woman's voice after the rescue. "The first thing, I start hearing her talking, and I felt like, 'She's OK,'" he said. "At the same time, you know, my eyes burn from the smoke, I can't breathe. I can't breathe. I felt that it was a relief, you know, more than a pain. I know, like, I'm going to be fine soon.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities suspect that the woman may have left food cooking on the stove. The woman was airlifted to the UCSD Medical Burn Center for treatment. Her current condition has not been updated.
