My Chemical Romance announced their reunion in 2019 and three years later released their first new song in nearly a decade, "The Foundations of Decay," before finally heading out on the postponed tour. Since then, the band's laid low. They performed The Black Parade at the nostalgia fest When We Were Young last month, but that didn't cause any buzz around new music. Then, out of nowhere, they posted a cryptic image to Instagram with an equally cryptic caption that reads, "If you could be anything, what would you be?"

The black and white image seems to show the pointy tops of buildings, with confetti (or bits of paper) floating in the air. There's text written on the image in bold maroon that almost looks like Russian script. It could say "MCR" but the first letter looks more like a "K," which is leading fans to think it could be teasing the band's scrapped concept album The Paper Kingdom. They were working on the project after Danger Days but didn't finish it before breaking up in 2013.

Although MCR turned off comments on Instagram, fans took to X to react to the post.

"I HAVE NO WORDS WTFFF MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE" wrote one fan.

Another was freaking out so hard they couldn't even spell correctly, writing: "my chemical romance u are gojng to make me throw uo"

The overall sentiment mirrors these reactions, with fans generally losing their minds over the band's potential return. But one shared a hilarious thought about what the post could really be teasing. "us all saying that they’re finally releasing paper kingdom and we’re gonna look so silly when it turns out to be just be my chemical romance branded notebooks," they wrote.

We'll have to wait and see what MCR is planning. For now, check out their cryptic Instagram post below.
