HBO has released the trailer for its upcoming documentary, “Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary.” The film delves into the smooth sounds and laid-back vibes of yacht rock, featuring interviews with Michael McDonald, Christopher Cross, Kenny Loggins, and Toto’s Steve Lukather. The trailer, available on YouTube, also includes appearances by actor and musician Fred Armisen and Questlove, who charmingly describes yacht rock as “perfect sitting down dancing music.” Armisen adds a comforting note, saying, “The singers all seem to be saying, ‘Hey, it’s going to be OK.’”
The documentary looks back at the careers of McDonald and Cross, who candidly discuss their decline in popularity over the years since they had hits on the radio. Cross remarks on the impact of music videos, noting that “video did kill the radio star,” while McDonald shares his expectation of being forgotten by the end of the '80s. Despite these challenges, their music has endured, continuing to resonate with fans old and new.
Music Box: Yacht Rock: A Documentary premieres on HBO on November 29th at 8pm Central.
