A fire recently broke out in the garage of David McConnell's home in Winterville, Georgia, and eventually spread through the house. He had been napping and was awakened by strange noises but initially just ignored them. Then his fire alarm sounded and he woke to discover his home filling with thick smoke and found himself trapped behind a locked storm door.
As McConnell struggled to escape, Dylan Betts happened to be passing by on his way home, noticed the smoke, and stopped to see if he could help. Fearing someone might be trapped inside the home, Betts kicked down the storm door and entered through the heavy black smoke, calling out to anyone still inside. McConnell heard Betts' voice and was able to reach him, allowing the good Samaritan to pull him to safety.
Firefighters soon arrived at the scene and reported the roof had collapsed due to the fire’s rapid spread. Fortunately, thanks to Betts’ heroic actions, no one was injured in the blaze. To show their gratitude, McConnell’s family gave Betts tickets to a Georgia/Tennessee football game, and now they’re calling the man who risked his life to save a stranger "our hero."
