New York Plans to Close a Dozen Migrant Shelters Before 2025

At least a dozen migrant shelters in New York are expected to close before the end of the year.

Two hotels in New York City that have been turned into migrant shelters have already closed in the Hotel Merit in Manhattan and the Quality Inn JFK in Queens. 10 more facilities across the state are set to be shut down by Dec. 31. Those shelters are located in Albany, Dutchess, Erie, Orange and Westchester counties.

According to the New York Post, there are 210 city-run shelter sites in the city's five boroughs. Another migrant shelter on Randall's Island is expected to close by February, a few weeks after Trump's inauguration.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams says they have seen about 223,000 migrants come to their city since 2022. According to the mayor's office, there are currently 58,000 migrants still staying in taxpayer-funded shelters.
