DDG: Pet Pig Spreads Joy With Daily Visits To Senior Living Facility

A miniature pig named Oden has become a beloved presence at the Good Samaritan Society senior living facility in Olathe, Kansas. Oden’s owner, the facility's maintenance director Brett Martin, introduced the little pig despite some initial doubts from his boss. At first a shy piglet no bigger than a soup can, Oden has grown into a confident 40-pound charmer, strutting through the hallways on his leash and brightening everyone’s day.

The residents have embraced Oden with open arms, saying he brings joy and comfort to their lives. Mindy Howell admits she was a little surprised at first but now looks forward to his visits, calling them “awesome.” When he’s not making the rounds visiting residents and bonding with staff, Oden can be found lounging behind a baby gate in Martin’s office, grunting cheerfully. Though he’s become a bit spoiled with treats, especially apples, the pig’s charm has made him an important part of the community.

Oden’s visits are particularly meaningful for residents in the memory care unit, with some being reminded of their farming days. After having previously worked with a pig in a special needs setting, Martin brought Oden in with the hope of boosting morale for both residents and staff. That plan has worked better than anyone could have imagined — Oden has become a cherished part of the community, spreading smiles and laughter everywhere he goes.
