In a recent local newspaper article, the Katy ISD was criticized for 'banning' 14 new books to start the school year. But in a KTRH exclusive, it turns out, that's not the real story.
"We're not banning any books" said Morgan Calhoun, a Katy ISD Trustee, "And to be fair, the board didn't actually do this. This was on the administration, the administrative side, to remove those books."
As for the 14 books, they include "I Never", which is about a young girls sexual awakening, and also "Nineteen Minutes" which a novel about a school shooting.
"We're talking about explicit, graphic material, such as rape, incest, abortion, and suicide" Calhoun told KTRH.
The books are still available, just not for kids in public schools which is the state law here in Texas. And more changes could be coming in the next Texas legislative session, which begins on January 14th.
