Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has now successfully shut down the second attempt by local Democrats to create a guaranteed basic income program in Harris County. This second attempt at the "Uplift Harris" Program wasn't any better than the first.
The lone Republican on the Harris County Commissioners Court, Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey, told KTRH that this is just an attempt to buy voters. He said, "They designed this program to give money to selected zip codes in Harris County. It was strictly partisan."
But just because Uplift Harris has now been shot down twice by the courts, don't expect Lina Hidalgo and the Harris County Democrats to stop trying. Ramsey thinks they're going to try a third time. He said, "They have money set aside in what I call 'the slush fund.' But they've lost this in court once, they'll lose this time."
Ramsey says the Harris County Democrats won't be able to get this program past the courts so long as Attorney General Paxton keeps pushing back against them. He said, "I'm just so thankful we have Attorney General Paxton, who's willing to engage on these kinds of issues. So, as long as we have Attorney General Paxton, we're fine."
